The anarchic animated comedy was originally intended to be a satire of sentimental family sitcoms, and as a result has mostly disregarded the rules of continuity and canon. In its thirty years on the air, The Simpsons has always been known to flout the rules of conventional TV writing. The Simpsons has never taken continuity too seriously, but there are a handful of recurring characters that the show killed off for good.
